We spent today at the Shiloh battle ground. It is huge and many men died there. More than 23,000 casualties during the two day battle. Today there are tons of monuments erected there. Many headstones and the church of Shiloh still exists. There is still a practicing congregation. They built a new church on the original site and moved the old church a few hundred feet away. It was very moving to be there. They showed us a 45 min movie that pulled it all together which was helpful. It was the first time that anyone had tried to set a field hospital and treated the wounded in one place. There were something like 120,000 troupe there. Dick figured with that many men in that space you were likely to hit someone every time you shot your gun. It was said to be the bloodiest battle of the war.

This is called "bloody pond" because so many wounded men and horses came here for a drink of water and to die.
