I stand corrected. I did not realize that there is the city of Miami and also the city of Miami Beach. We were looking at the city of Miami the other night and Miami Beach was in back of us.
We are now in Ft. Lauderdale on the New river. We are sandwiched between two lift bridges. One for trains and one for cars. We wondered if the train bridge was ever used. Lol. All night the sirens went off warning that the bridge was coming down and then the train would come. Talk about noise. Then there are the cars going over the other bridge with that constant noise. But we are right downtown and it is quite exciting. Quite the contrast to our previous two nights on the hook.
Getting in here nearly sent us both over the edge. It was a beautiful day of cruising despite the fact that we had 14 bridges to go under and many we needed to wait to have them lifted. We missed several openings only by minutes. That meant a half an hour wait usually till the next opening. So it took so long to get here that we missed slack tide. The captain felt confident that he could slip our little boat into that very little slip at Coolies landing. That is when he realized the true meaning of underwater currents and the need to come in on slack tide when the tide is changing and there is the least amount of current. After several failed attempts we gave up and went back thru the last lift bridge we had come thru and tied up to a sea wall. After talking to the the dock master and bouncing around in the channel like a pinball for what seemed like hours we were able to finally identify our sea wall and get tied up. There are huge mega-yachts on this river and they expect you to stay out of their way or else suffer the consequences. It was a harrowing day to say the least. We are happy to be tied securely to a wall for now. We plan to stay for 2 more nights. Then heading up to Ft. Pierce.
Our dog is scratching like crazy and will get a bath later today. Maybe that island I let her run around in yesterday wasn't such a good idea.
We also suspect we may have rope wound around the port side prop because of lack of power when in reverse. Will have to find a diver sometime today. And so it goes when you are living the marine life.
Here comes a train.
