Why has no one thought to write the novel about the bridges of South east Florida?
We left downtown Ft. Lauderdale yesterday morning without a problem. We needed 2 bridges to be opened just to get out of the river. I believe I counted 23 bridges total yesterday and over half of them we had to wait for them to be opened. The last draw bridge we had to wait one and a quarter hours for it to open. There were a lot of boats waiting because it only opened once an hour and not at 4:15 because of rush hour traffic. What a mess. Luckily the bridge tender announced which boats were to go first but there were all these little boats rushing to get in front. That was the Flagler bridge which is under construction. So by the time we got thru there and out of the area it was past 5:30 and the marina staff had all gone home. Can't blame them. It was Friday night. But we had difficulty finding the marina, going thru a bridge we didn't need to and finally asking the bridge tender for directions. That helped a lot. Then we got to the marina and couldn't find our slip but the people here were very helpful and here we are. Nice and cozy in this very nice and very quiet marina.
We are planning another 50 mile day today but will not have nearly the bridges to contend with and will only need to have 2 opened for us. Sounds like a breeze. We will hopefully be in Ft. Pierce tonight. Wish we could stay in this lovely marina one more night but are hoping to catch up with Mary and Larry for a day before they leave on Sunday. I am also looking forward to seeing an old friend, Barb Meinhardt, who I have not seen in over 30 years. She and her then husband were in my wedding in 1971. Looking forward to catching up with her.
Not many pictures because it was a busy day keeping track of our location and what bridge was next and what it's height was. Luckily we had no problems with the depth of the water. Deeper on this side of Florida.
More to come.
